How-to · Grading
The most commonly cited anchors: ~3 years for a very dedicated student, ~4–5 years for most people training two to three times a week, and longer for casual or part-time trainees. Some strict organisations effectively require closer to five years or more. This is style-and-school dependent — and a useful reality check is that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu averages roughly ten years to black belt, which shows ‘black belt’ is not a standardised unit across arts.
You progress through the coloured kyū grades first — commonly every ~3 months early on, stretching to 4–6+ months at the brown-belt grades — before testing for Shodan. See how the ranks work on our karate belts in order and grading syllabus pages.
